Buying a pre-owned diamond ring: a practical checklist
Check diamond identity and reports alongside the setting, size, wear and total cost.

A pre-owned diamond ring can be worth considering when you understand the details and inspect it before buying. Size and sparkle in a photograph are not enough to establish value.
Ask about the diamond
Is it natural or laboratory-grown? What report or details are available for that stone? Check that the report corresponds to the actual diamond. The 4Cs—carat weight, colour, clarity and cut—help comparison; carat weight alone is not enough.
Check the setting as well
Inspect prongs, stone security, distortion, wear and evidence of repair. Try the fit and ask about resizing before deciding. One report for a centre stone may not cover every diamond in the ring or the setting’s condition.
Understand the evidence
Some items have reports and others do not. Neither the absence of a report nor a photograph alone establishes authenticity. If information is insufficient, ask about further checks or choose a better-documented piece.
